Why do you do what you do?
There is energy whenever you are surrounded by individuals who are creating things. We see that drive and excitement in crowdfunding and it’s a lot of fun. We initially got involved in this industry because I was helping run a Kickstarter campaign. After the campaign was over, we needed a way to collect the information and help quantify what we needed to ship. We needed a solution and this is how it all started.
We developed strong personal connections with project creators. It was much more involved than just investing and backing a Kickstarter or Indiegogo project. We needed to learn in depth, what the project creators needed and help them to streamline their work with an intuitive software solution that made things easier and gave them new options for upselling products and increasing their income. We also found it interesting to look behind the curtains a bit, and through learning more about the projects, we figured out more ways to help the creators.
What are the top three most important things in your life?
- Family: I have 4 kids and finding the right work-life balance is important to me. All of my kids are young, and that makes the holidays a lot of fun! Because I work from home, I get to see and interact with them every day, which I love.
- Travel: I love exploring new places throughout the country and the world. Whenever we go somewhere new, we try to find historical buildings or tours so we can really learn the history of the places we are visiting.
- Creating: Whether it’s woodworking, building software or trying to come up with a creative solution to a problem, the passion for building and creating new things has always been a big part of who I am.
What is an interesting, memorable fact about you?
In 2011, my wife and I traveled throughout the country. We were recently married and didn’t have strong ties to any one place, so we went and explored the United States. We stayed in a new state each month and got to see a lot of the South and the East Coast.
What do you look for in a Crowd Ox team member?
We look for people that are self-motivated and good at problem-solving. Every campaign has its own set of unique challenges. Kickstarter projects are an open platform; you have to take that description and turn it into quantified items. Having a team that’s versatile makes all the difference. We also need team members with great communication skills, they need to make sure that project creators feel supported and get the help they need through the process.
What is the most rewarding thing about your company and what you do?
We tend to hear the same story over and over again, and each time we do, it feels great. The story goes like this, a project creator is excited, their project has been fully funded and now they quickly move into a new phase. They have to manufacture a product, figure out how many products to ship, who to ship to, and how to add in extra products and services to what they initially offered to their backers. Campaign creators are always extremely grateful when they realize how our software can simplify things and give them back time to focus on other aspects of their business. I don’t think that the crowdfunding backers understand how difficult it is to go from the idea stage to developing, manufacturing and shipping out new products. It takes a lot of hard work and it is satisfying to help streamline the process for our customers.
