“Delivered:” is a series in which we look at crowdfunded ideas that have successfully shipped to their supporters. We dive into the final product, after its long journey from concept to fulfillment
Simon Birks, the Author of Sinners, Gone, Robyn and The Girl in the Midnight Gown, has now written Hexes, a downright creepy graphic novel filled with suspense that will has me on the edge of my seat. The comics were produced by Blue Fox Comics group quoted by Starburst magazine to have produced “some of the most visually impressive and narratively interesting books on the indie comic book
Hexes is a supernatural horror story collection. The group of comic stories has over a hundred pages, four separate tales, and it is in full color. The graphics fit the mood of the book and have an eerie suspense to them. The narratives are well written and leave me feeling unnerved and disoriented. The suspenseful tales could happen to everyday people, I find them extremely relatable, which makes them all the creepier.
The titles of the different stories are: “The Boy Who Came Closer”, “Waking Nightmare”, “Midnight Oil”, and “101”. Each of the books inside this comic is filled with poetic suspense, nightmares, strange corridors, and monsters. They contain a depth of thought that makes me ponder- weaving thought provoking creepy tales.
All of the stories are written in relation to the Hexiverse, which is explained as those events that you experience that seem to have no explanation. The author describes it perfectly as: “Everyone has a story. Everyone has experienced something they dare not repeat, something unexplained, something inexplicable. But we bury it, and pretend it didn’t happen. Guess what? That’s the Hexiverse. And you are in the middle of it.”
Hexes is an entertaining and thrilling narrative, I could feel my heart pounding with suspense after the first few pages. Each story contains it’s own creepy and unique elements.
