“Game On” is a series in which we examine the companies, creators, and games in crowdfunding. We look at the journey, ideas, and concepts the creators wanted to bring to market with their product.

Don Lloyd of Knight Works is the creator of Dragon Keepers He has been playing board games since childhood and as a child he dabbled in creating his own games. He started Knight Works back in 2000 and produced his first game called Shadow Wars. He was able to sell 60 of his original game copies before his discovery of Kickstarter. It was only after his discovery of Kickstarter that he was able to professionally manufacture a small print run of games. He released his very first Kickstarter campaign for Dark Horse in 2012. Since that time he has released four other games: Rebels and Rogues, Forged in Steel, and Hands in the Sea.

In his most recent venture Don teamed up with Vital Lacerda and his daughter Catarina on Dragons Keepers. They launched their project on Kickstarter on March 12 and were 30% funded within the first day. By March 14 they were getting close to 50% funded. Don offered a free miniature for those that helped his group to reach social goals for the campaign. By March 23 they were 70% funded. On March 24th they unlocked their first stretch goal and did a Dragon spotlight of one of the dragons that would be part of the game. By April 9 they had successfully raised $33, 912 for the release of their game.

Dragon Keepers is a game representing a battle between two powerful forces. The first is a group of evil hunters who want to destroy dragons for trophies and fame. The other group is the heroic dragon keepers who protect and train the dragons. Each player represents the chief of a specific tribe of dragon keepers who will defend the dragons from attacks by the evil hunters at all cost!” The game has two different modes Keeper Mode, and Dragon Mode. Keeper Mode is when the goal for each player is to defend 3 different dragons. During Dragon Mode the goal is for the players to train a predetermined number of dragons and have them successfully attack a hunter.

The game was reviewed by Slay the Dragon who said “Vital and Catarina’s creation is a rare breed-a cooperative game that is accessible, genuinely challenging, versatile and designed so as to give each player the freedom to influence the game without one dominant player pulling the dragon reigns.” The graphics for the game are very creative, and the game is endowed with elements of magic that are used throughout the game by the keepers. There is a Golden Bow, Keepers Touch, Dragon Song, and Serenity cards that allow a player to take a powerful independent second action during their turn.
