“Game On” is a series in which we examine the companies, creators, and games in crowdfunding. We look at the journey, ideas, and concepts the creators wanted to bring to market with their product.

Xia was created by Cody Miller from Far Off Games. Cody is a husband and full time father of three kids. He can be seen on his instagram account playing board games with his sons, or making Tacos while doing game design. He is unique in the sense that he lets his game supporters see a taste of his everyday life and supporters have enjoyed seeing his little family grow. He got into board gaming when he was engaged and decided to take a break from video games and started playing board games instead. He started working on Xia in 2005 developing and working on the game with friends over a few years. Eventually he was able to print his first copy that was met with phenomenal success. Their game Xia: Embers of a Forsaken Star has been nominated for the Golden Geek Awards. Other games that  his team has made are Xia Mission Powers, Xia Legends of a Drift System, and Tavarua.

The original Xia game did very well and is currently valued for $200 on Amazon. Farr Off Games decided that Kickstarter would be the perfect place for the rerelease of their game along with an expansion set. They released the game on January 31, 2018 and were completely funded in two hours. Within the week they hit some pretty amazing milestones with reaching over 5,000 backers. Cody, let backers vote on the design of the coins for the game and also added a Spanish version.  They were able to finish the campaign with $503,881 and Cody celebrated with his family by treating them all to milkshakes and a dance party.

The story behind Xia is set in space, players choose their unique ship and explore mysteries of the universe. Players use miniature ships to move around the board and explore different parts of the galaxy. Each of the ships have their own unique properties that need to be considered throughout the game. Players can also upgrade their ships and be able to upgrade the items within the ship. There are three different phases in the game the business phase, the action phase and the status phase. Players will find resources and battle other starships in order to gain fame points. Different situations will be encountered throughout the game like asteroid fields in which they will need to roll dice to see if they pass safely.  Everything is kept track of on the fame point track and the winner is the one who reaches a specific amount of points.

The set also comes with an expansion set that is designed to bring balance and more possibilities to explore to the original Xia game. The Awards and honors that the game was nominated for are extensive. In 2014 they were nominated for 5 Golden Geek Awards, Meeples Choice, and 5 Dice Tower Gaming Awards.
