“Game On” is a series in which we examine the companies, creators, and games in crowdfunding. We look at the journey, ideas, and concepts the creators wanted to bring to market with their product.”

JD Dutra, the creator of Conflicted has survived being a hostage. During elementary school he was held hostage by a man and his wife who came into their school with a gun and a bomb. The bomb ended up going off and throwing Joshua across the room. During that time in Elementary school he learned that he could either live or die and that there were certain things that he could do to aid his survival. The game is meant to get people thinking about what they really need to do to survive. It also helps people cope with devastation by using preparation so that they are prepared for their own apocalypse.

He wrote the first deck for the game while he was eating at Panda Express. A prototype was made of the game and tested by dozens of play testers. Three of his friends came and went adding their own special touch to the game. The game originally just one deck of cards and today it has gone from 1 to 10 different survival card decks to over 50 countries around the world. The board game version of the game took three years to develop and test.

They released Conflicted on Kickstarter and it was instantly funded. They mapped out the stretch goals and were able to show what backers could earn if they reached certain pledge levels. On the campaign board they collaborated with a lot of other Kickstarter Campaigns to promote their items. JD did a filmed play through of the game so that backers could see an overview. They added a tracker card so that players could tell what part of the game they were on. They were successfully able to raise $64,929 for the printing of their board game.

In the game Conflicted, each player receives a unique set of strategy cards. through the dealing of the cards each of the players will receive a leader card, an asset card that shows you what your home base is. Once you have enough resources then you can team up with survivors and each one of them has a unique set of skills.  You can gather Equipment cards that will allow you to be able to trade things with other players or use them in unique situations. The government cards represent the government trying to take things from you and you get to decide if they can take over your equipment or if you will fight to keep it.
