Game On: Maybe It’s Poison- Card Game
“Game On” is a series in which we examine the companies, creators, and games in crowdfunding. We look at the journey, ideas, and concepts the creators wanted to bring to market with their product.
For the Bored Brothers, Bryan and Ben Buttars playing games with family has always been a staple in their lives. Growing up their family bonded around grandmas table playing traditional board games. They recognize that gaming is an important way to bond with people and interact face to face instead of being buried in technology. For Ben, his first word was “GAME” then “play game”. The brothers are known for their creation of the game Switch-A fast paced , ditch you hand card game.
The Bored Brothers launched their game Maybe It’s Poison on Kickstarter on June 21, 2018. By June 25th they were 30% backed with 100 backers. By July 15th they were 100% funded with $14,011. Throughout their campaign they had a special group called the noble tier where people could send images in to be a permanent part of the game. They hosted a live play through of Maybe It’s Poison on the campaign so that backers could see how the game played. A Kickstarter exclusive wooden box to hold the game.
Maybe It’s Poison is a game where many guests sit down for a cup of tea and only a few leave alive. Actions cards are used to try to manipulate the position of the cups so that players can get the good cup of tea in front of themselves. Cups are shuffled face down on the table in front of each player with one extra cup. Players take turns checking the cups, memorize them to discover the delicious tea, and the person with the tea in front fo them when “Cheers” is said, wins! The rest are poisoned.
There are different cards that are played with Maybe It's Poison to help manipulate the cups. Rotation cards, Swap Cards, Cancel cards, and Poison cards that allow you to change the flow of the game into or out of your favor.
