Game On: Mountaineers: A 3D Board Game
“Game On” is a series in which we examine the companies, creators, and games in crowdfunding. We look at the journey, ideas, and concepts the creators wanted to bring to market with their product.”
Massif Games was started by Corey Wright. He was inspired to create Mountaineers while he was backpacking across Europe with his wife. The beautiful Alps sparked the idea that he wanted to create a 3D mountain for the board game. He spent a week on the beach in Greece sketching up ideas. When they got back to the USA Corey started making prototypes and he received enough feedback that he decided to kept working at his idea. Corey spent two years testing, developing, and showing his game at conventions, trade fairs, and street markets. He gathered an email list of those that were interested in the game.
Corey reached out to Kickstarter to launch his Mountaineer game. The game took off and they were 75% funded in the first few days. He was able to show backers a solo play through of the game so they could see how the game worked. By November 13 they were 100% funded and had introduced many reward levels. Corey unveiled some stretch goals and encouraged his backers to share the game with friends and also join the facebook page. He offered reward levels to backers where they could receive a legendary edition and have a glacier named after them on the game board. Corey was successfully able to raise $145,148 for the creation of his game.
Mountaineers is a 3D board game for 1-6 players. It is a strategy game requiring interesting game choices and has mechanisms that include area control, resource management, modular board design, pattern building, and variable player power. It could possibly be the worlds called commercial board game with an 18 inch tall spinning mountain that is right in the center of the game. The mountain has small pegs on it that the climbers can fit into and move along. There are supply tokens that can be used throughout the game to aid players in maneuvering on the board.
At the beginning of the game you choose 1 character and 4 climbing routes with a starting position at the bottom of the mountain. Climbers who gain the most climbing points are the winners. Climbing routes are an important way to earn climbing points. Players should choose climbing routes that work well together and are feasible for the current mountain setup. Players can draw event cards that include conditions change, 1-3 player, and 4-6 player. They include events like cougar sighting, nasty squirrel, and strong wind. These cards increase the difficulty of the game and can affect the climbing for everyone on the mountain.
