“Game On” is a series in which we examine the companies, creators, and games in crowdfunding. We look at the journey, ideas, and concepts the creators wanted to bring to market with their product.”

Tasty Minstrel Games was started in 2009 by Michael Mindes. The name for TMG was originally derived from a cannibalistic scene in “Monte Python and the Holy Grail.” Michael Mindes has always loved everything to do with gaming. As he has gotten older his passion for it has only increased. After college he worked for his father as a financial advisor, but had dreams of becoming a board game publisher. Today, he runs TMG in Utah, and has several full time employees. TMG is known for creating deluxified  game titles, and has released Orleans, Yokohama, Chimera Station, Flow of History, and Crusaders. Gentes was a special deluxifying project that TMJ took on.

The game Gentes was originally published by Spielworxx. TMG felt that  more people would want to play and enjoy this civilization game. TMG launched a deluxified version of Gentes on Kickstarter on January 23, 2018 and was completely blown away to discover that their entire project funded in an hour.  The final game ended up having a deluxified box sleeve art, an embroidered bag for the coins, and print screen upgrades. As part of the deluxification process, TMG decided to replace the cardboard components with wood and metal without having to wait for backers to hit a stretch goal for a material upgrade. They also announced that they were able to work with frosted games to release a matching expansion of New Cities so that the expansion set and game would match. Their campaign was successfully able to raise $484,242 with a total of 7,156 backers supporting them for the production of their game.

The storyline behind Gentes is that players are part of the first Millennium BC in the Eastern Mediterranean. Groups of people have banded together to form city states. The goal of the players is to help their civilization rise to prominence. “Players will guide their civilization through the ups and downs of history, trying to make sure they are the one who makes a permanent mark in the annals of history.”  While training priests, soldiers, artisans, and soldiers, and merchants players will establish and populate significant cities while creating monuments that will ensure their greatness long after they have become a part of the past.

Actions in the game require money and time. In the game actions are chosen and there are only so many actions that may be taken before time runs out. There is a track on the game that will fill with hour glasses. Gentes is a strategic game that requires all brains and nothing is left up to luck. It is a Euro game that is focused on smart selection and time management. The right amount of actions must be taken in the right amount of time for players to build their civilizations.  To find out more about Gentes and the upgrades that were part of the deluxification process please visit the links below.
