“Delivered:” is a series in which we look at crowdfunded ideas that have successfully shipped to their supporters. We dive into the final product, after its long journey from concept to fulfillment”

Heartwood is a compilation of tales that cater to non-binary individuals. It is the first comics anthology that is made entirely by cartoonists that identify as non-binary gender. The book is over 250 pages of content and has 21 stories that cater to young adults. It is a great media source for young adults to read who identify as non-binary, or even for people who are tired of reading heavily gendered media.

The setting of Heartwood mostly focuses on the forest, tales of folklore and fairy tales that delight the imagination. The forest has always been a symbol of facing the unknown and emerging as transformed. Tales that have been written about the forest have been tales of caution, adventure, rites of passage, and discovery. Some of those stories persist as the folklore and fairy tales. “This anthology is for everyone who’s walked through the undergrowth, in the silence of nature, and longed for an adventure of their own to unfold.”

Heartwood is very beautiful and it feels as though it was thoughtfully put together. It is filled with different art styles and has a consciousness of gender and cultural diversity. The book has neutral pronouns and provides a break from heavily gendered media. The stories are filled with a lot of creativity and there are different types of experiences that each of the characters have.

It is nice to have a book that does not focus so heavily on gender. The pronouns in the book are sensitive to people who do not identify as either gender. It is a good book for non-binaries to feel like they have a media source that they can relate to. To find out more about Heartwood and its kickstarter campaign please visit the links below.
