Game On: Roam
“Game On” is a series in which we examine the companies, creators, and games in crowdfunding. We look at the journey, ideas, and concepts the creators wanted to bring to market with their product.”
Roam was created by Red Raven Games. Ryan Laukat founded the company in 2011 and designs and illustrates most of the games that the company produces. He has been working at board game design and illustration since he was 11 yrs old. Before starting Red Raven he was a freelance board game artist. Some of the games that he has published are: Above and Below, Near and Far, The Ancient World, Artifacts Inc., City of Iron, Eight-Minute Empire, Eight-Minute Empire: Legends, Empires of the Void II, and more.
Roam was wildly successful on Kickstarter. Within ten minutes of the release of the game it was fully funded, and had already blown through a few of their stretch goals. A fan box was released that held expansion sets for some of the games that Red Raven had previously made. The team released a video of a play through of the Gem Maps expansion for ROAM and then announced that they were 1000% funded for the printing of their game. They ended the project having $221,927 raised for the production of their game.
The storyline behind ROAM is that it is set in Arzium which is a common setting for the other games that Red Raven creates, “land of ancient civilizations, bizarre creatures, unexplained wonders, and vibrant characters. A great sleeping sickness has spread across the land, sending every type of creature to wander for hundreds of miles in a dazed, incoherent march. It’s your job to seek them out and wake them from their sleep, recruiting them to help you find even more lost souls!”
In ROAM game players search the land of Arzium for lost adventurers. There are Tarot sized adventurer cards that include characters from Near and Far, Above and Below, City of Iron and Islebound. “The opposite side of each card depicts a landscape split into six squares, and two rows of three of these cards are placed in the center of the playing area to make the board.” “Each turn, you may activate one of the adventurer cards in your party by flipping the card face down. Activating an adventurer allows you to place search tokens on the board in the shape depicted on your adventurer card. When every square on a landscape card has been searched, the player who did the most claims the card, finding the lost adventurer and adding them to their party. Each adventurer you add to your party gives you points and a new search pattern that you can use. When searching, you also claim coins, which can be spent to use special actions or purchase artifacts with useful powers. When one player has ten adventurers in their party, the game ends, and the player with the most points wins.” To find out more about ROAM or their Kickstarter campaign then view the links below.
