“Game On” is a series in which we examine the companies, creators, and games in crowdfunding. We look at the journey, ideas, and concepts the creators wanted to bring to market with their product.”

Petrichor was created by the company Mighty Boards. They are a small team who is based in Malta and Poland. Their games span a variety of thematic and mechanical genres that have one thing in common. They have rich, evocative theme and meaty engaging mechanics. Their company aims to “make beautifully designed and crafted board games that generate intense challenges and evocative stories.” They believe that “rules, stories and the visuals and pieces that express them are key to creating a great board gaming experience.“ Some of the games that they have created are: Vengeance, Posthuman Saga, Nights of Fire, and  Days of Ire.

Mighty Boards released Petrichor Honeybee expansion on Kickstarter on October 16, 2018 and was completely funded in 8 hours. Within 48 hours they closed in on a new stretch goal. Mighty Boards asked their backers if they would be more interested in a cardboard bee or in a chunky one for their new expansion set. In less than a month Petrichor was completely funded.

In the game of Petrichor players are a cloud and a force of the weather such as wind, raindrops, and now in this new expansion there is also a honeybee to help them. “The players move clouds with water droplets, and then rain those droplets onto specific fields, to make sure they have the right amount of water for the Harvest. During a Harvest, crops that have been watered enough are scored! Players are able to influence when, and how often the harvest happens. Players need to strike a fine balance between maintaining control of the different fields as well as influencing Harvest, to make sure the two come together in the optimal time.”

The new Petrichor expansion of the game deepens it and also brings new action and resources that can be used in the game. Four new tiles and a giant bee are included  and players will pollenate apple trees, blueberry bushes or watermelon. The expansion is for 1-4 players and if combined with the Flowers expansion it supports 5 player mode.
