Game On: Atlantis Rising
“Game On” is a series in which we examine the companies, creators, and games in crowdfunding. We look at the journey, ideas, and concepts the creators wanted to bring to market with their product.
Atlantis Rising was created by Elf Creek, with co-founder Brent Dickman. Elf Creek creates fun strategy games that are beautiful and fun to play. Founded in 2017, they publish games that offer fun challenges for families, dedicated gamers and those new to the game. They’ve successfully funded 3 different games on Kickstarter.
Atlantis Rising launched on November 2, 2018, and their goal of $20,000 was fully funded in three hours. All 24 stretch goals were reached within the campaign and those rewards included upgrading to include pieces for a 7th player, features to enhance 2-player, and solo play. They were also able to develop digital rulebooks and card translations in French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Greek. By the end of the campaign on November 20, 2018 2340 backers pledged $161,008.
The game combines two genres: cooperative play and worker placement. It’s a strategy game that often comes down to the final moments. Players are fighting against the Gods trying to destroy the isle of Atlantis, taking the roles of leaders of Atlantis and their followers. The goal is to build a cosmic gate that will lead the people of Atlantis to safety before the sea overcomes the isle. Resources are needed to build the gate and are available throughout Atlantis. The most abundant resources lie on the edges of the isle, and are also the most dangerous.
Players must work together to decide where to allocate the workers to gather resources to build the gate. Misfortune cards disrupt strategy and players can look in the ancient library for wisdom and artifacts to help their cause. At the end of each round players must decide together where to direct floodwaters and which tiles of the island will disappear. The game continues until the players win- build all 10 components of the cosmic gate, or lose with the entire island of Atlantis flooded.
