Game On: Kodama 3D
“Game On” is a series in which we examine the companies, creators, and games in crowdfunding. We look at the journey, ideas, and concepts the creators wanted to bring to market with their product.
Kodama 3D, created by Indie Boards and Cards, is an expansion for the Kodama universe that brings together modular, three-dimensional trees. Kodama 3D is the 51st project from the combined teams of Indie Boards and Cards & Action Phase Games. It was designed by Erica Hayes-Bouyouis and Daryl Andrews and illustrated by Kwanchai Moriya.
Kodama 3D was launched on Kickstarter June 27, 2019 and fully funded within 2 days. Over the next few weeks, all 12 stretch goals were reached which added extra promo cards, tokens, and stickers to the game. On July 18, 2019 the project ended with 724 backers who had pledged a total of $22,545 to bring the game to life.
This tactical tree-building game and brings a new perspective on the hit game. Players build their tree in 3D with all-new gameplay from the original Kodama game. Players are trying to build new homes for the Kodama spirits while keeping the forest healthy and lush. The game takes place over three “growing seasons”.
On their turn, players move one of their two Kodama in a straight line around the grid of branch tiles and use the tree tile they moved off and add to their tree. Players must balance their tree as they build and try to complete goals on the cards. When players have 12 tree branches, scores are collected and the player with the most victory points wins.
