Game On: Tsuro: Phoenix Rising
“Game On” is a series in which we examine the companies, creators, and games in crowdfunding. We look at the journey, ideas, and concepts the creators wanted to bring to market with their product.
To celebrate its 10th business anniversary, Calliope Games released Tsuro: Phoenix Rising on Kickstarter. Calliope Games was founded in 2009 and began with the release of their first game in the Tsuro series: Tsuro: The Game of the Path, and couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate a decade of games than to release a new game for Tsuro fans. Calliope Games creates games with the gamer and non-gamer in mind. Their games are a great starting point for newcomers but include enough strategy and intrigue for veteran gamers. All players regardless of skill level or age play in under 60 minutes and enjoy spending time together as family and friends.
Their Kickstarter campaign began on January 10, 2019, with the funding goal of $10,000. They were fully funded the first day and had reached $50,000 in 48 hours. Over the next few weeks, they were able to reach all 25 of their stretch goals to include new tiles, extra pages in the art book, and more gaming pieces. An anniversary party at 2019 Gen Con was also included after they hit the $100,000 mark. By the end of their campaign, 3,757 backers pledged $241,621 to bring this project to life.
Tsuro: Phoenix Rising is a board game of tiles, floating lanterns, and constellations. It’s a new entry in the classic Tsuro series. Each player is a phoenix, trying to reach glowing lanterns and transforming them into new stars in the sky. The first player to collect seven star-tokens wins the game.
Tsuro: Phoenix Rising builds on the story of the classic Tsuro as players must play tiles to extend their path and move across the board. Additions to this game include features that allow for diagonal movement and rotating double-sided tiles to build the path and the ability to rise from the ashes and return to the board once per game.
