Game On: Aftershock: San Francisco and Venice
“Game On” is a series in which we examine the companies, creators, and games in crowdfunding. We look at the journey, ideas, and concepts the creators wanted to bring to market with their product.
From the designers who brought Ticket to Ride to life, comes a new game from Stronghold Games, Aftershock: San Francisco and Venice. Stronghold Games is known for their board and card games and best known for their #4 game of all time on BGG Terraforming Mars and other best-sellers like Survive: Escape From Atlantis! and Space Cadets. Stronghold Games has launched 47 projects on Kickstarter and have a reputation for making family-friendly games.
Aftershock: San Francisco and Venice was launched on Kickstarter February 2019 and was funded in less than 24 hours. The campaign was able to triple their funding goal of $10,000 and end with 732 backers with a total of $31,825 pledged. An expansion pack was included with each pledge that offered six-player support and area tokens for replay-ability.
In the game, players get to rebuild the Bay Area after it was hit by mega earthquakes. Players plot out their actions behind the player screen so their opponents can’t see others’ strategies. Players populate the board, build bridges, and utilize the aftershocks to displace populations. Players can choose from their hand or buy a card from other players in a closed economy model. Spending money wisely to acquire aftershocks allows the players to move their people into and out of demolished areas and get points based on their best-planned cities and bridges. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins.
With the District 6 expansion area tokens add a new element to the game. Area tokens are placed randomly on different city sections at the beginning of the game and during play present challenges or rewards. The area tokens create a totally new and unique play experience every time.
