Game On” is a series in which we examine the companies, creators, and games in crowdfunding. We look at the journey, ideas, and concepts the creators wanted to bring to market with their product.

Creativemaker is a board game company started by a group of friends who share a passion for board games. Their three games have been passion projects brought to life on Kickstarter and show the work, energy, and time they devote to their games. Creativemaker was established by Seweryn Piotrowiski, the author of Galaxy of Trian: New Order.  Their latest project, The Valley of Alchemists, had a team of nine talented individuals all contributing to the success of the Kickstarter campaign.

The Valley of Alchemists was launched in October 2017 and was fully funded in two days. The campaign soon gained popularity and Creativemaker was able to hit every stretch goal and social goal they set for themselves. The stretch goals saw the design of the six different decoction upgraded several times. They were also able to increase the size of the cards from 5cm to 7cm and a new coin was unlocked after hitting their $60,000 goal. The 1st-Player metal token was the last stretched goal to be unlocked after backers hit the $81,000 mark. By the end of the campaign, 1,603 backers pledged $117,511 to help bring this project to life.

The game is a family game for 2-4 players based on set collection and patter building mechanics. Players manage their resources to get the most cards in the right combinations in order to gain experience points. The player with the most experience points at the end of the game wins. Players become expert alchemists as they concoct elixir and learn along the way. New ingredients become available and players create new potions and use magic to change the characteristics of the creations.

Throughout the game, players collect ingredients with magical properties and create decoctions that combine to produce colorful elixirs. With each new elixir created players increase their skills throughout the game. Players put together complex combinations and earn points to eventually become the best alchemist of the season. The Ghost Expansion allows for a 5-players game and adds two new game modes. Companions introduce a direct player on player interaction and increases the options available to players. Dragon Contest creates an intense competition between players as they try to increase their skills and gaining a generous bonus.
