Game On: The Grand Carnival
“Game On” is a series in which we examine the companies, creators, and games in crowdfunding. We look at the journey, ideas, and concepts the creators wanted to bring to market with their product.
Uproarious Games is a company dedicated to creating games that create experiences. It was launched in 2016 by the award-winning game designer, Jeff Beck, and is based in Salt Lake City, Utah. Whether outwitting an opponent, exploring uncharted territories, or laughing until the tears come, Uproarious engages a player’s imagination with each game they release. The Grand Carnival was designed by Rob Cramer, developed by Jeff Beck, produced by Tim Fowers, and illustrated by Ryan Goldsberry.
The Grand Carnival was released on Kickstarter in September 2019 and was soon fully funded. Uproarious Games thanked its backers for their support and announced stretch goals. Uproarious shuffled the order of stretch goals based on backer feedback. Backers hit all ten stretch goals that brought meeple and token upgrades, player reference cards, and new Tricks of the Trade cards. By the end of the campaign, 1,122 backers pledged $43,249 to help bring this project to life.
In The Grand Carnival, players compete to create the most impressive carnival the town has ever seen. Players carefully plan their carnival’s layout, build attractions, hire staff, and manage crowds. The game is an action-selection and tile and polyomino placement game with a few twists. Individual turns are quick and accessible for new players, and the overall strategy can be deep and rewarding for seasoned gamers.
Players must design their carnival carefully by selecting where attractions can be built and where guests can walk. Throughout the game, there is a race for resources like attractions, tiles, guests, and carnival staff. Players learn new tricks that allow them to bend the rules in meaningful ways and must master them before their opponents. Uproarious Games also added a new Solo Mode where a player can work to build a carnival and still hit obstacles and restrictions along the way.
