Game On: Sherlock Holmes: Baker Street Irregulars
“Game On” is a series in which we examine the companies, creators, and games in crowdfunding. We look at the journey, ideas, and concepts the creators wanted to bring to market with their product.
Van Ryder Games (VRG) is dedicated to producing high-quality, thematic games and gamebooks. Founder A.J. Porfirio started Van Ryder Games in 2011,, and it has since grown to a team of six. A.J. has a love and passion for thematic games and wants to bring each customer an experience they’ll never forget. A.J. has an affinity for solitaire games, which lead to the design of Hostage Negotiator, VRG’s best-selling title.
Sherlock Holmes: Baker Street Irregulars launched on Kickstarter in December 2019 and was fully funded within the first day. VRG thanked backers for their support and shared a sample interrogation grid and let backers choose the story’s course throughout the campaign. Sherlock Holmes: Baker Street Irregulars is a fully developed graphic novel adventure game and VRG offered no stretch goals for this campaign. By the end of the campaign, 1,627 backers pledged $64,887 to help bring this project to life.
In Sherlock Holmes: Baker Street Irregulars, players work together to explore the city of London and solve mysteries. The family-friendly gameplay for 1-4 players is great for kids ages eight and up and very enjoyable for grown “kids at heart.” There is virtually no setup time, and the minimal rules mean players can get started in as little as five minutes. Players can choose between one of four street urchins that each come with their own book and different talent.
VRG also released a never-before-seen Graphic Novel Adventure book, Sherlock Holmes: The Beginning. The entire line of Sherlock GNAs takes place after the dive off Reichenbach Falls, where Sherlock and Moriarty allegedly plunged to their deaths. Now, with The Beginning, players can see what happened after those events and how Sherlock got back to investigating with his trusted friend Dr. Watson. As always, players get to choose the story, choices, and adventure.
